With design origins in the rich tradition of New England boatbuilding, the 51' Little Harbor Ted Hood Pilothouse captures the mind, heart and spirit of old-world sailors in a modern, comfortable, well-equipped sailing vessel that utilizes the latest materials and technology.
This is one of the 51 Little Harbors built at the Little Harbor US facility in Portsmouth, RI. A joy to sail, this yacht offers spacious living quarters with amenities not typically found on any sailboat, particularly one of this size. If you’re considering a Hinckley or S&S, do not overlook this Ted Hood 51 - a world-class motor-cruiser.
Captain-maintained by her original owner and co-builder (in conjunction with Ted Hood) this gem has remained in Palm Beach condition since her original commissioning in 1996.
Numerous upgrades were ordered during the building process that have transcended through the years to be now standard equipment on most modern semi-custom yachts. A 5 KW Panda Generator and a new Yanmar 160 HP Turbo Diesel only begins to describe the special amenities you'll find aboard.
During the past 6 months, she has been extensively refitted with a new Yanmar, Borg Warner transmission, 125 Amp Alternator, all new canvas, freshened original hull (buffed and waxed to a flawless finish), new bottom paint, Cutlass Bering and 10 coats of freshly varnished exterior toe and hand rails.
You will find that this yacht has all the equipment and systems one would expect for offshore cruising. The long waterline length, moderate wetted surface and powerful sail plan assure very good performance. The electric Stowaway mast and electric winches allow easy shorthanded operation. The spacious interior is attractively finished with a large lower salon and well designed pilothouse that offers ocean and harbor views while seated. 200+ miles a day are routine under sail and speeds under power are comparable to trawlers.
The world-renowned yacht designer and builder Ted Hood's expertise in creating these high-performance cruising Little Harbors puts this vessel among the world's finest luxury performance cruising yachts. The 51' Little Harbor Pilothouse was created for sailors who desired an offshore design with the benefits of a pilothouse and a fully-protected raised living cabin without compromising the pleasure of fair-weather sailing from a traditional cockpit.
Special Features of her inventory include:
Hood In-mast Electric stowaway mainsail furling
Electric Primary and secondary winches
Yanmar 160 HP engine with only 100 hours!

Accommodations
The interior provides a comfortable, uncluttered living space with a spaciousness typically found in boats twice this size. Teak and holly cabin soles and solid American cherry trim gives the interior an old-world ambiance while off-white bulkheads and headliner panels, coupled with numerous hatches and portholes, add light that enhances the feeling of openness. Little Harbor offers exceptional interior volume and exquisite woodwork. This yacht, sporting classic Herreshoff style interior with white bulkheads and varnished cherry trim is no exception.
The main salon features a circular seating area for up to seven people. To port there is a full settee with convertible pilot berth outboard. Both are ideal sea berths. Design and Construction
Rugged fiberglass cored hull and deck construction for maximum strength and thermal and sound insulation. Ted Hood's unique heavier-displacement, low wetted surface hull shape with long sailing waterline length, combined with high-aspect sail plan provides excellent performance including in lighter wind conditions. Vinylester hybrid resin and foam core, laminated with a Kevlar hybrid for added stiffness.
The owner chose the optional keel/centerboard configuration with a defined keel like the Little Harbor 53 and 54. This enables her to sail to windward with the board raised unlike most of her sister ship Little Harbor 51's with Ted Hood's "whale bottom" design that requires the board to be lowered.
- The structural bulkhead forward of the owner's stateroom is watertight to act as a collision bulkhead.
- Fuel and water tanks are built of molded FRP. All tanks are fully baffled with ample inspection ports and the water tanks are coated with FDA approved gelcoat to ensure good taste and smell.
- Chainplates are made of 316 or equal stainless flat bar weldments thru-bolted to reinforced FRP foundations attached to hull.
- The engine bed is FRP with steel reinforcement, bonded directly to the hull.
